Dear Sister
Your letter of the 5(th) came to late for poor Dear Jennie to read. I wrote Bro Sam suppossing you were there close at Hand as Jennie never told me very much about you. I didn't know. Jennie Dear died Sunday morning Feb 3 - at 11.15 a.m. her trouble was [ acute ] cute Pluresy of the stomach and consumption of her lungs. She died God bless her a christian. It is a comfort to me to no that little Eva has been very sick [ ever since her fever ] her eyes are very bad also. Poor child she suffers our loss so much she was 3 years old the 11 of July. But she knows as much as some children at 8 or 9. You will tell Sam if I can find that piece of cloth I will be pleased to send it to him and all so wanted. Bro Will address it is Dayton Oregon. Well I am a very poor hand at writing so will close. Hopeing you will feel at liberty to answer this and all so that it will find you all in good Health. I remain

COMPLIERS NOTES:
I have tried to transcribe the letter as completely as possible, with spelling and punctuation errors intact. This particular writer, by his own admission, was not good at grammar and spelling, and where necessary, I have transcribed inside [ brackets ] so the reader may better understand what was being said.
This particular letter was written by William Dusenbery of Rosedale, MO -- which is a suburb of Kansas City, MO. William was the husband of Jennie Channell, oldest daughter of Solomon Channell and Catherine Taggart Channell. Jennie is the oldest sister of Marshall and Samuel Channell, brothers born one year apart in 1838 and 1839. Marshall and Samuel served together on the western frontier duing the civil war -- protecting the Overland Trail mail and stage routes. These brothers are the focus of my family history and genealogy.
Samuels wife, Samantha Huggins, appeared to remain close to all the Channell family siblings and family members. Samuel himself appears to have been a "favorite" uncle of Marshall William Channell's, Marshall having moved to Chase County, Kansas circa 1872 where he married Mae Barnes, daughter of William Barnes. There are numerous letters in the collection from Marshall's children to Samuel and Samantha Channell.
When I first obtained this letter, it offered several important clues about the family -- 1) that Jennie had married William Dusenbery; 2) They had a daughter, Eve; 3) They lived in the Kansas City, MO area; 4) an exact date and time of death, as well as place of death; 5) the location of the families youngest brother, William, last child born of Solomon Channells third marriage to Catherine Lance when they lived in Brown County, Ohio.
The remaining letters have much, much information such as these, written by family members between Kansas, Missouri and Ohio. While they deal mainly with family matters, there are mentions of other names and a dash of info sprinkled through out them.
