Peyton, Dennis Family

Dennis Peyton came to Wise (later Chase) County, Kansas, in October, 1857. Dennis was of Irish descent and was born and raised in Culpepper County, Virginia.

He was married in that state and is said to have had eleven sons and two daughters. Only a part of this family came with him to Kansas. The census of 1859 lists Dennis Peyton and three sons, Lewis, Thomas and Philip; there were, however, several other children, Martha, Amanda and Jackson that we know of.

Dennis Peyton settled near the mouth of Peyton Creek, which was named for him. He farmed on that place until his death and was buried on the home farm.

Of his descendants: Lewis Peyton died in youth.

John, Gip, Silas and Frank remained in the east.

Thomas Peyton married Louisa Oldsberry; he was a farmer, and died at his home near Leon, Kansas, in 1903.

Jackson Peyton married Rebecca Spurgeon.

Amanda Peyton married a Mr. Smith.

Martha Peyton was 13 years of age when the family came to Kansas, having been born in Culpepper County, Va., March 4, 1844. Martha married Simon Walters September 12, 1864, and continued to reside in Chase County until 1871, when the Walters family moved to Merriam, Johnson County, Kansas. There Martha passed from life April 28, 1895.

Philip Peyton married Lydia A.., daughter of. Mr. and Mrs. John Sharp, on March 9, 1865. Philip was always a farmer. In 1874 he moved to a farm on Sharps Creek and in 1879 to a farm one mile south of Bazaar on South Fork. There he farmed and raised livestock for the next thirty-five years. He died in Axtell's Hospital, at Newton, Kan., November 13, 1914, of apoplexy. He was buried in the Sharps Creek Cemetery. His wife, Lydia, lies beside him. She passed from life February 17, 1915. Philip and Lydia Sharp Peyton were the parents of six sons and four daughters.

They are: William H. Peyton, born December 30, 1865, married Nora Shaner, and lives (1940) at Drummond. Okla.

John D. Peyton, born November 15, 1867, married Anna Davis and lives at Cogar, Okla.

George Peyton married Mary Sager and lives at Binger, Okla.

Ray Peyton died at the age of 23, and is buried in the Sharps Creek Cemetery.

Cornelius Peyton died in infancy. He rests in the same cemetery.

Ralph E. Peyton married Jessie Turner and lives at El Reno, Okla.

Martha Peyton married William Lawrence, of Bazaar; they farm on Sharps Creek.

Huldah Peyton married Adam Davis, of Reedly, Calif.

Nancy married Mr. Sager, of Bazaar, and Mary married Mr. Viewig, of El Reno, Okla.

The name Peyton has been written Payton so often that the latter spelling is now as common as the former.
