PRAIRIE GROVE CEMETERY

In 1874, at a meeting of the citizens of Cottonwood Falls at the M.E. Church, an application for a cemetery charter for the Prairie Grove Cemetery, located a mile west of Cottonwood Falls, was adopted. Officers were: F. B. Hunt, president; W.A. Romigh, secretary; A.P. Gandy, treasurer; and the following trustees: John T. Prather, W.S. Romigh, A.P. Gaudy, George W. Estes, and F.B. Hunt. The Trustees were instructed to perfect title to the cemetery, and to have it surveyed.

On July 5, 1925, the Cemetery purchased a tract of land from Mrs. George Drummond to enlarge it two and one-half rows of lots the entire length of the cemetery. They, also, make an 18 foot road on the west. Directors and officers at this meeting were: President, Mrs. Ralph Breese; Vice-President, Mrs. June B. Smith; Secretary, Mrs. John Sanders; Treasurer, Mrs. Chas. Davis; Director, Mrs. E.D. Replogle.

Early financing plans of assessing yearly dues for up-keep of the cemetery or a set sum for life-time care, did not prove satisfactory, so people of Falls Township were given the privilege of voting for or against the Township taking over, so that a small levy could be made to cover expenses, and it carried. Since then, the cemetery has been owned by Falls Township. Funds, which the cemetery had on hand, were turned over to the Township.
