Allen, Lottie Valentine Brown
Lottie V Allen Dies at her home.
Mrs. Lottie V. Allen died suddenly at her home in this city Friday afternoon as the result of a heart attack. Mrs. Allen had been ill only a short time before her death, and it was not until the same day of her death that her family became alarmed. Her passing removes one of the best known women of the county, for Mrs. Allen had lived here for the past 63 years, coming to the Homestead vicinity with her parents in 1872.
The funeral services were held from the Allen home at 3:00 o'clock Sunday afternoon. The Rev. E. M. Scott had charge of the service. lnterment was made in Prairie Grove cemetery. A quartet composed of Jim Bell. Elmore Stout, Mrs J. E. Stout and Mary Scott sang at the service. Miss Helen Scott was at the piano.
Following is the obituary read by Reverend Scott:
"Lottie Valentine Brown was born in Wabaunsee county, Kansas, on February 14, 1863, the daughter of Alexander H, and Harriet Dibble Brown, and passed away at her home in Cottonwood Falls, on June 14, 1935, at the age of 72 years and four months. When nine years of age she moved with her parents to Chase county, settling at Homestead, where she grew to womanhood.
On February 15, 1881, she was married at Cottonwood Falls to Thomas Gurney Allen. They made their home at Toledo, in this county, until 1891, when they moved to Cottonwood Falls, which has since been their home, with the exception of a few years spent in Kansas City.
"Mrs. Allen was a loyal Kansan, and one of her greatest pleasures
was ,writing verse about her native state.
In 1920 her book, "Prairie Poems from the Sunflower State," was published.
"On February 15, 1931, Mr. and Mrs. Allen's children gathered at their home in Cottonwood Falls to celebrate the golden wedding of their parents. The companionship of this happy
marriage was broken in November, 1933, when Mr Allen's death occurred.
"Mrs. Allen was a member of the Presbyterian church, which she attended regularly when her health permitted.
"Mr. and Mrs. Allen were the parents-of eight children, Edna M. Allen, Lenore Smith, Elsie Fisk, and Dale Allen, of Cottonwood Falls; Burton, Benjamin and Edwin Allen, of Kansas City, Mo.; and Robin Allen of Amarillo, Texas. Mrs. Allen is survived by her children, ten grandchildren, one great grandchild, and
the following sisters and brothers: Mrs Grace Mowrey, Caldwell,
Idaho; Mrs. Leila Place, San Francisco, Calif.; Mrs J. C. Riggs,
Burns, Kan-sas; Mrs. Mabel Wright, Wilmore, Kansas; Mrs.
Hattie Elliott, Plains, Kansas; Roy H Brown Albuquerque, N. M.;
and Herbert Brown, San Francisco, Calif. Mr. Allen's sister,
Mrs. Betty Stanley, who has made her home with her brother's
family for the past five years, also suvives.
"With a cheery smile and a wave of her hand,
"She has wandered into an unknown land,
And left us dreaming how very fair
It needs must be since she lingers there."
Mrs. T. G. Allen Dies Suddenly on Friday
Widow of Late Probate Judge Had Lived in County for Sixty Years
Mrs. T. G. Allen of Cottonwood Falls, a resident of this county
for 60 years, died Friday evening at her home after a short
sickness with heart disease. Funeral services were held Sunday
afternoon at 3 o'clock at the home, and interment was in
Prairie Grove cemetery beside her husband, the late T. G.
Allen, for many years probate judge of this county.
The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. E. M. Scott of
the Presbyterian church. Three songs were sung by Mrs. J. E.
Stout, Miss Mary Scott, Jim Bell and Elmore Stout,
accompanied by Miss Helen Scott. Pall-bearers were Harold
Miller, Glen Wood-ring, J 'R. Sheridan, Harold Austin, W. H.
Smith and Gerald Lutz.
