Armitage, Lyle Garrett

Emporia native Lyle Garrett Armitage Jr., 67, died Sunday, April 16, 2006, at his home in Eureka.

The son of Lyle Garrett Sr. and Etta Reed Armitage, he was born April 26, 1938, at Emporia. He grew up in Burkett, where he attended Burkett Grade School. He graduated from Hamilton High School. He married Joyce Sailor on May 26, 1956, at Hamilton. She survives.

Mr. Armitage was a fire-fighter with the Emporia Fire Department and then a patrolman and detective with the Emporia Police Department. He retired at age 52 and moved to Eureka Lake. He later returned to law enforcement, joining the Greenwood County Sheriff's Department where he worked for 10 years before he retired in 2002. He served with the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Armitage was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Police and past president of the Lake Club.

He is also survived by two sons, Lyle Garrett Armitage III and Bob Armitage, both of Emporia; two daughters, Shari Sidler of Strong City and Mari Collins of Emporia; one sister, Norma Bruhn of Nevada, Mo.; and 11 grand-children. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Ann Hensley. The memorial service was April 19, in the Koup Family Funeral Home at Eureka. Tom Miller con-ducted the service. Inurnment was in Blakely Cemetery at Madision. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Eureka High School Baseball Fund or the Greenwood County Hospice.
