Austin, Lavansha

Mrs. Lavansha Austin, widow of the late James Austin, died at her home east of this city, Monday, November 22nd after an illness of about a month. Mrs. Austin was 86 years of age and her final illness was principally the result of age. The funeral was held at the Austin home Wednesday, and interment was in the Austin lot in Prairie Grove cemetery. Rev. Frank Porter of Eureka conducted the funeral services.

Mrs Austin who before her marriage was Miss Lavansha Ewing, was born at Farmington, Oakland county, Michigan, May 1, 1840. Her mother died when she was a girl and upon her fell the duties, of house keeper for her father. When she finished school she became a school teacher for several years. Her brother's wife died leaving two fatherless children. Miss Ewing quit school teaching and took these children to the home of her father where she raised them to young womanhood.

She was, married at Roxand, Michigan, December 18, to Mr. James Austin of this city, whom she had known since they were schoolmates in Michigan. They immediately came to Cottonwood Falls, to the Austin farm east of this city which has since been her home. On coming to Kansas she again took up the responsibilities of a motherless family, two boys and two girls from three to eight years old. These she raised to manhood and womanhood. Her whole life was spent in service for others.

Her husband, James Austin, and three of these children, George Austin, Mary Austin and Mrs. Sarah Glanville, preceeded her in death. She is survived by her son, W., C. Austin, five grandchildren, James Austin, William Austin, Mrs. Catherine Norton, Evangeline Glanville and William Glanville, one niece, Mrs. Laura Bergman, and a number of grand nieces and nephews in Michigan. Mrs Austin endured the hardship of pioneer life and waivered in her service for her husband and children. She asked litt1e for herself and gave everything.
