Bailey, Sarah Frill

Mrs. Sarah Bailey Dead

Mrs Sarah Bailey died at the home of her step-son James Bailey, in Emporia Monday morning. She was in her ninety-six year and has been sick for several weeks.

Mrs Bailey's maiden name was Sarah Frill and she was born near Berkley Spring, in Morgan county, West Virginia, October 07, 1814. She was the fifth in a family of seven children, with three sisters and three brothers. When she was 14 years old, she moved with her parents to Ohio, and the family settled on a farm near Troy, where they lived for a number of years.

It was at this place in 1846 that she was married to James E. Bailey, who was pastor in the Friends church. In 1880, Mr. Bailey and family moved to Douglas county, Kansas, where he shortly afterwards died. Mrs. Bailey afterwards moved to Lawrence and five years ago, came to Emporia to live with the family of James Bailey.

Mrs. Bailey was the mother of five children, three daughters and two sons. Of these, three are living, one son, T C Bailey, of Lawrence; and two daughters Mrs. Rebecca Stoner, of Danbury Texas and Mrs. Mary E Haynes of Harvey, Iowa. She was the second wife of Mr. Bailey, who left her eight step-children. The second daughter in this number was Esther, who was married to John Stubbs, and she was the mother of Governor Walter R. Stubbs.

Mrs. Bailey had an interesting family connection. Beside the three children, she leaves eighteen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. She also leaves four step-children, thirty-one step-grandchildren, ninety step-great-grandchildren and five step-great-great-grandchildren.

She was proud of the distinction that had come to her step-grandson, Governor Stubbs, and the governor, in turn, has given her a deep affection, and has visited her a number of times in Emporia.

A short funeral service was held in Emporia Tuesday morning after which the body was taken to Eudora and from there removed to the family burying ground at Hesper where Rev. Bailey and Gov. Stubb's mother are buried. The funeral will be held in the Friends church nearby. At Topeka, Gov. Stubbs and family joined the funeral party.

Clerk of Court S. E. Bailey of this city, who is a grandson of Mrs. Bailey, went to Emporia Tuesday to attend the funeral services that were held before the body was taken to Hesper.
