Barber, Margaret Catherine Mrs. M. C. Barber
The death of one of Chase county's former residents and one of its most honored women occurred Thursday, April 27th, at Eureka Springs, Arkansas. On that day, Mrs. M. C. Barber passed away after a short illness caused from acute appendicitis. Her children—Geo. L. Barber of Saffordville and Chas R. Barber and Mrs. O. H. Kendig of Emporia—were notified of her illness and left immediatly for Eureka Springs but received a message while on the way announcing her death. The remains were brought to Emporia Sunday, where funeral services were held at Mrs. Kendig's home Monday afternoon, a second funeral was held at Plymouth, preached by Rev. Finch after which burial was made in Toledo cemetery.
Mrs. Barber's maiden name was Margaret Catherine Loy. She was born Jan. 1st, 1849 at Lacell, Ill. Together with her parents, she came to Americus, Kansas in 1860 and was there married to C. H. Barber in December 1865. Shortly after this, Mr. and Mrs. Barber moved to Chase county, locating on a farm near Saffordville, where they continued to live until the former's death. Ten years ago, Mrs. Barber moved to Eureka Springs, because of poor health. She has made many friends there and was prominent in benevolent work, being president of the Ladies Aid Society of that place. She united with the Methodist church at Americus in early girlhood and has been an earnest christian and a constant worker in the church since that time.
Her death is mourned by the entire community of Saffordville and Toledo and the bereaved children have the sincere sympaty of all.
