Barker, James

It becomes the painful duty of the editor of this paper to chronicle the death of his aged grandfather, James Barker, famililarly called by his friends, Grandpa Barker.

Ever since our earliest recollections we have looked up to Grandpa Barker as a idol. In our later years we have learned that there are many men with greater business ability, men whom the world would judge had made a greater success of life than Grandpa Barber but if it were our time to die we would have to leave the record of a life spent as has been Grandpa Barker's. That he had made a success of life in its highest sense no one will question and his death will bring sorrow to the hearts of all.

His death came peacefully at the end of a long and well spent life and our greatest sorrow is for her who for more than 60 years has been his daily companion.

James S. H. Barker was born in Perry, New York, May 23 1818. His parents both died when he was a child and hen was adopted by a kind hearted neighbor with who he4 lived until manhood. He joined the Methodist Episcopal Church when about twelve years old and was an active worker in the church all his life.

On June 6th,1839 he married Miss Catherine Clark also of Perry, New York. . To this union was born three children, two sons and a daughter. All of these children have been dead for many years. Mr and Mrs Barker came to Kansas in the spring of 1870 and two years later bought the farm a mile and a half north of Bazaar on which they lived until feeble health compelled them to quit farming.

About five years ago they moved to Cottonwood Falls where they lived two years and then moved to the home of their son in law, James Austin, about two miles east of this city.

Mr. Barker died Tuesday morning, Oct 10, 1905, at the age of 87 years, 8 months, and 17 days. He leaves besides his aged wife, three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren, and his son in law, James Austin and wife with whom he lived.
