Mr. Editor: to the mysterious providence of an All-wise Being, we are again called upon to record and mourn the demise of one of our most valued citizens.
Mr. S. F. Barnes, of Diamond Creek township after a lingering illness borne with manly patience and christian resignation, passed to the higher life on Thursday night, April 23, 1885 his remains being deposited in the cemetery near this city, on the following Sabbath.
The deceased was born in the State of New York in 1843 removed to Kansas about 1870 purchased a fine farm on which he lived and died. The subject of this memorial was a true hearted man in every sense of the word; a kind, indulgent husband and father; excellent neighbor; a warm, fast friend; a firm believer in the doctrine of the final salvation of the human family, in which faith he lived and died happily.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Alfred Barnes, Universalist, pastor of the Junction City parish, who gave as a matter of fact discourse, and as we believe general satisfaction to a large concourse of citizens assembled at the home of the deceased, who bore the remains company to the place of interment.
"Oh, brothers, traveling hand in hand, On life's long road, again we pause, And here in grief and mourning stand, As one more from the ranks withdraws.
With us he shared the pains and joys, That rise along our pleasant ways, The labor which our strength employs, The toil and burden of the days.
And now he quits our weary train And marches o'er the heavenly hights,
But we shall work with him again And share his rests and his delights.
God comfort us, the wife and children bless. While this dear friend thy love receives; Raise the sad mourners from distress
And gladden every heart that grieves."
