Barnes, Sam

Sam P. Barnes, 81, of Whitesboro, Texas, died Sunday morning, Oct. 31, 2004, at Wilson N. Jones Hospital in Sherman, Texas.

Sam was born March 2, 1923, in Anna, Texas. He was the youngest of five sons born to Walter Edward and Birdie Lera Dillon Barnes. He married Lillie Hester Estep on Nov. 13, 1943.

Barnes was a U.S. Army Air Corp Veteran of World War II serving with the 549th Night Fighter Squadron in Iwo-Jima. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from North Texas State University. He was a teacher and coach in Frisco, Gunter and Anna, Texas. After his master's degree in school administration he became Superintendent in Anna, Texas. He was business manager for Dumas I.S.D. from 1961-65. He then served 18 years as Superintendent of Lazbuddie Schools. He retired to Muleshoe in 1983, before moving to Whitesboro in 1987.

He served as Deacon in the Lazbuddie Baptist Church and currently is a member of the First Baptist Church of Whitesboro.

He is survived by his wife, Hester, of 61 years; three sons, Ronny Barnes, Lubbock, Texas, Monte Barnes, Bowie, Texas and Mark Barnes, Farwell, Texas; daughter, Marilyn Hinkson, Cottonwood Falls; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a brother, Edward Barnes, Princeton, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Bill, Cecil and Odell.

Funeral services were Wednesday, Nov 3, 2004, in the Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Chapel with Rev. Daryl Woerz officiating. Interment was at Cottage Hill Cemetery in Celina, Texas. To convey condolences or to sign an online registry, please visit www.tjmfuneral.com.
