Bastin, Lowell Lavergn

Lowell Lavergn Bastin, 83, a longtime resident of Elmdale, died Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004, at Newman Regional Health.

Mrs. Bastin worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Elmdale for 30 years before she retired and also worked part-time at Bummie's Grocery Store in Elmdale. She moved to Emporia in 1999.

The daughter of Floyd and Nellie Brooks Starks, she was born Jan. 9, 1921, in Mount Moriah, Mo. She married Earl "Shorty" Bastin on July 8, 1939, in Cottonwood Falls. He survives.

Mrs. Bastin, a member of the First Christian Church in Elmdale, attended the First Christian Church in Emporia. She was a member of the Elmdale extension unit and the Hilton Disciples of Christian Fellowship.

She is also survived by one daughter, Carol Cooper of Emporia; two sons, Larry Bastin of St. Louis, Mo., and Dan Bastin of Blue Springs, Mo.; one sister, Anna Marie Green of Cottonwood Falls; two brothers, Harvey Starks of Elmdale and Howard Starks of McPherson; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. A daughter, Patsy; five brothers, Dorman Brown, Burley Starks, Edgar Starks, Garland Starks and Darrell Starks; two sisters, Letha Schreiner and Lucille Slifer; and a great-grandson, Luke Brooks, died earlier.

Services were March 2, 2004, in the Brown-Bennett-Alexander Funeral Hone at Cottonwood Falls. Burial was in Elmdale Cemetery. Memorial contributions to the Shorty and Lavergn Bastin Scholarship Fund at Emporia State University may be sent in care of the ESU Foundation, 1500 Highland St., Emporia, KS
