Beaver,Virginia Elizabeth Carden
Virginia Elizabeth Beaver, 85, of Independence, died Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, at St. Francis Hospital, Wichita, after trauma from a fall at her home. Arrangements have not yet been made for a memorial service.
Virginia Elizabeth Carden was born March 7, 1918, at Kansas City, Kan., the daughter of Claretta and Linton Carden. She was raised by her Uncle Otha and Aunt Lena Johnson on their dairy farm in the Monticello Community of Johnson County, Kan. Her parents, aunt and uncle preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Jean Hopkins, Westport, Wash., and Peggy Gregg, Kansas City, Kan.
She married George J. Beaver on July 13, 1940.
She is survived by her husband, George; two sons,
Donald Beaver,
Independence and David Beaver, DeSoto; one daughter, Kathryn Shockley, Conway Springs,; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two brothers, Jack Carden, Prairie Village and Linton Carden, Overland Park; two sisters, Carrie Lorton, Leawood and Mildred Mickelson, Grapevine, Texas; and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.
She graduated from DeSoto High School in 1935 and from the Kansas City Business College in 1937. She lived in the Monticello Community until she moved to Caroliton, Mo., with her husband. At Caroliton, they operated
the International Harvester dealership. In 1948, they moved to Strong City. There, they owned and operated Beaver, Inc. In 1971, they moved to Cottonwood Falls,where they remodeled a home just south of the river dam. In 1984, they sold their business and moved to Independence.
She was a member of the Monticello, Strong City, Cottonwood Falls and Independence United Methodist Churches. For many years she was very active in the ladies church circle. In Chase County, she was active with her husband in the Flint Hills Rodeo Association. She tirelessly served as the unofficial “secretary” of the association for years. She also furnished the “legs” behind her or her husband’s civic endeavors in the Lion’s Club, Masonic Lodges, Shrine Clubs, Cub Scouts, 4-H, county government and numerous other activities or “projects.”
The family suggests memorials to the First United Methodist Churdch, Independence. Condolences may be mailed to George Beaver, Route 2, Box 271, Independence, KS 67301.
