Beckett, Ida May A Horrible Accident
About two o'clock, Tuesday afternoon, Ida May, the 14 year old daughter of Wm Beckett, living near the Ohio house in this city, undertook to kindle a fire in the kitchen stove with coal oil when the can exploded, enveloping her in flames.
She ran out of the house and circled it several times before anyone came to her rescue. A tramp passing the house pulled his coat off and smothered the flames. When the neighbors congregated and did all in their power for her comfort. She was attended as soon after the accident as possible by Drs. Ravenscroft, Schmidt, Polin and Pugh, but she was beyond all medical aid, and about 9:30 pm passed quietly to that bourne whence no traveler e'er returns.
Her parents are almost distracted by the tragic death of their eldest child and have the sincerest sympathy of the people of this community in their dire affliction.
The funeral took polace from the residence in this city Wednesday afternoon, the sermon being preached by Rev. C. H. Wareham.

Ida May was the daughter of William Jasper and Mary Elizabeth Webster Beckett. She was born in Effingham, Effingham, Illinois on 06 Sept 1870 and died 15 Juol 1884. She is buried in the Prairie Grove Cemetery at Cottonwood Falls, Kansas. She was a sister to Roberta Beckett Roberts. She wrote a letter one month prior to her death to her cousin, Ida Jacobs, in Illinois. Submitted by Irene Kleiber
