Bell, Jane F. Galbraith
Jane F. Galbraith Bell, 87, of Emporia, formerly of Cottonwood Falls and Lenexa died Wednesday, June 25, 2008, at Presbyterian Manor in Emporia.
The daughter of Thomas Claude and Emma Thompson Galbraith, she was born Dec. 6, 1920, at Herington.
She attended Kansas State University, majoring in Home Economics and Nursing. In 1941, she attended K. U. Medical Center School of Nursing in Kansas City; Kan. In 1942, she went to work for Trans World Airlines as a stewardess.
In 1978, she entered Newman Nursing School in Emporia, graduating with honors in 1981. She was Director of Nursing at the Chase County Nursing Center until 1984.
She and James Bell, Jr. were married on Oct. 3, 1942, at Craig Field Chapel in Selma, Ala. In 1945, they moved to Cottonwood Falls, where her husband joined his father in running the store, Jim Bell and Son. Her husband died in 1978.
She and her husband were active in their church, scouting and many civic groups in Cottonwood Falls. She was initiated into P.E.O. Chapter BZ in Chase County in 1939 and transferred her membership to FN chapter at Mission when she moved to Lenexa. She was a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority at KSU.
In Lenexa, she was awarded a Community Service Award by the city in 1989. She was a volunteer for many years for Meals on Wheels and was in the original group of volunteers at the Cultural Education Center at Johnson County College. She sang in the Shawnee Mission Women’s Chorale and in her church choir. She was awarded the 1994 Volunteer Award at Lakeview Village in Lenexa.
She is survived by three sons, Thomas Bell, Joseph Bell and Robert Bell all of Cottonwood Falls; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Richard “Dickie” Bell and a brother T.C. Galbraith.
Services were Thursday, June 26, at the First Presbyterian Church in Cottonwood Falls. The Rev. Pat Ireland conducted the service. She donated her body to the University of Kansas Medical school to be used for educational purposes. Inurnment in Miller Cemetery will be at a later date.
