Bernard, Francis
Francis Bernard, one of Chase county's oldest and most honored residents, died at his home in Cedar Point Monday, afternoon. Mr. Bernard was 89 of age. He had been in failing health for over many years and for the last two or three weeks his condition had become critical and his death Monday was not unexpected. The funeral is to be held Friday afternoon at the Presbyterian church in Cedar Point at 8:00 o'clock.
Mr. Bernard had lived at Cedar Point fifty-three years and was among the first settlers to locate in that part of the Cottonwood valley. He has been a successful farmer and stockraiser and leaves a large estate to his heirs. He was one of the heaviest stockholders in the Chase County Natioaal bank of this city, and has been one of its directors for twenty seven years.
Mr. Bernard was born at Dijon in France la 1821, in the same year that Napoleon Bonaparte died on the Island of St. Helena. He was married at Dijon, France in 1852 and together with his wife came to America in 1864 first locating in New York City. He came to Chase county in August of the year 1867 where be has since remained a permanent resident. Mr. Bernard's wife died only a few years ago and they leave no children.
As interesting bit or hitory is connected with Mr. Bernard's coming to America. He had originally planned to establish a French settlement in the Cottonwood valley at Cedar Point and came here from New York City with a large stock of goods to open a store and trading station. There plans were later abandoned, however, and Mr. Bernard took a claim and became a farmer and stock raiser.
A Correction.
In publishing the provisions of the will of Francis Bernard in last Tuesday's Leader, we made one error which would leave a wrong impression io the mind of the reader: We stated that Mr. Bernard bequeathed 80 acres of land to the executor , of the will, Mr. J. B. Sanders. This 80 acre of land was bequeathed to the executor to sell and from the proceeds of the sale to pay certain bequeaths mentioned in the will. Mr. Sanders is not personally a beneficiary of the will.
