Bertwell, Florence

Florence "Gayle" (Shehi) Bertwell, 85, of Manhattan, died Saturday, July 10, 2004, at the Meadowlark Hills Retirement Community.

She was born near Fostoria in Pottawatomie County on Jan. 8, 1919, the daughter of George E. and Bertha E. Sweany Shehi. She attended Spring Creek Rural Grade School and graduated from Fostoria High School in 1936. Before she attended Strickler's Business College in Topeka, she taught for five years in the rural schools of Pottawatomie County. She began working at Kansas State University in 1943 as a secretary in the Department of Architecture and advanced to the Director of the Personnel and Retirement Department. She retired in 1982. Gayle was recognized that same year as the Classified Employee of the Year at Kansas State University.

She was married to Lewis Bertwell and they were the parents of one daughter, Beverly Gayle. They later divorced. Mrs. Bertwell was a member of the Manhattan Business and Professional Women's Club for more than 50 years, a member of The First Presbyterian Church and Women's Guild of the church. She was also a member of the Quilt Guild in Manhattan.

She is survived by her daughter, Beverly Bertwell of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Bernice Richter of Shawnee and Elsie Bock of Elmdale; one sister-in-law, Dolores Shehi of Manhattan; many nieces and nephews and long time special friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her twin brother Lawrence Dale, two other brothers and three sisters.

A funeral service was held at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel. Private family burial was in the Spring Creek Cemetery, near Fostoria.
