Blackburn, Russel

ANOTHER CHASE COUNTY BOY FALLS IN FRANCE Mr. and Mrs, W. R. Blackburn, of Bazaar, received a message from the, adjutant general this Friday morning telling of the death of their son, Russel Blackburn, who died of wounds received in the recent fighting in the Verdon sector.

The deceased together with six other Chase county boys were wounded about the same time in the severe fighting in the Verdon sector a little over a month ago. The other boys were Desmond Wilhite; Blaine Hunt, James Rollins, Heron Strauhn, William Brown and Churchill Greene, all of whom are believed to be recovering satisfactorily.

Russel Blackburn was a graduate of the Chase County High School of last year and enlisted last summer and was a member of Company M. which was trained at Camp Doniplan, Oklahoma. Following his injury in action, he wrote his parents saying that he had received a small wound but asked them not to worry because it would amount to nothing.

He died on October 13 th at Base Hospital No.35 on the Western Front near Verdun.

Russel who was one of the brighest and most popular boys of the High School during hiss attendance at this school was the friend of all. He was a gentleman in every respect and he was one of the first to volunteer his services to his country when the call came.

Since his enlistment, it has been learned of in many ways that he was one of the most efficient and bravest soldiers of the splendid lot of American youths which were in France to 'do their part in bringing world peace' and crushing the Hun. Truly he has made the supreme sacrifice and has given his young life which was his all.

While his parents and sisters are bowed in the deepest grief yet they may feel proud of the fact that their son and brother died as a brave soldier can and that another golden star has been added to the service flag of our nation.
