ELIZABETH R. BRANDLEY MRS. HENRY BRANDLEY DEAD

Cottonwood Falls, Kan.—Mrs. Lizzie Brandley, widow of the late Capt. Henry Brandley, of Matfield Green, died at her home yesterday following a sudden attack of heart failure.

Mrs. Brandley’s maiden name was Miss Lizzie Romigh and she was married to Captain Brandley in 1870. Her husband’s death occurred several years ago, and she is survived by seven children [sic]. They are Mrs. Clara Hildebrand, of Oklahoma; Mrs. Ruby Wagoner, Mrs. Pearl Harsh, and Harry and Robert Brandley, of Matfield Green; Mrs. Arthur Crocker and Mrs. E.G. Crocker, of Bazaar [Flora Brandley Lampe has been left out of this list].

Mrs. Brandley’s husband came to Kansas in 1859, locating in Matfield Township. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he enlisted in Company B, of the Ninth Kansas Cavalry, where he rose to captain of the company before the close of the war. The Brandley estate is one of the largest in this county, consisting of several thousands of acres of the best lands.

DEATH FROM HEART FAILURE

Mrs. Capt. Brandley Passes Away at Home of Daughter

Word was received here last Thursday of the death of Mrs. Elizabeth Brandley, wife of the late Capt. Brandley, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ed Wagoner, to which place she had gone to spend the day, after a thirty minute illness. The cause of death was appoplexy [sic], and the sudden result was keenly felt by the surviving children and friends in all parts of the county. Mrs. Brandley was in good health and her plans had been made for a pleasant day with the Wagoner family.

The good woman is survived by a family of eight children, and two sisters. The children are Mrs. Ed Crocker, Mrs. John Harsh, Mrs. Ed Wagoner, and Harry and Robert Brandley of Matfield Green; Mrs. Arthur Crocker of Bazaar; Mrs. L.J. [sic] Lampe of Kansas City, Mo., and Mrs. Ed Hilderbrand [sic] of Stillwell [sic], Oklahoma. All the children and a nephew, Lew Romigh, and daughter of Valley Center, were present at the funeral, which was held at the family home near Matfield last Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Oliver Bronston, former Methodist minister of the church in this city and who is now located at Galena.

Rev. Bronston delivered a very touching sermon and it was Mrs. Brandley’s wish that he officiate because of the fact that he officiated at the funeral of Capt. Brandley a few years ago, while Rev. Bronston was located at Cottonwood Falls.

Mrs. Brandley, whose maiden name was Miss Elizabeth Romigh, was one of the early teachers of the county, and in 1870 was married to Capt. Henry Brandley and for the past thirty-three years has lived on the Brandley ranch, one of the largest and best estates in Chase county. Mrs. Brandley was 69 years old at the time of her death.
