Harriet Burns, 82 Abilene, died Saturday, March 2, 2002, at the Beverly Health Care Center, Abilene. She was born Jan. 1, 1920, in Saffordville, the daughter of Harrison and Margaret (Becker) Stewart. She grew up in Saffordville, attended the local schools, and graduated from Toledo Township High School in 1937. She worked for the Salina Country Club.

In February of 1948 she married John D Burns. They moved north of Chapman in 1966 and to Abilene in 1984. Mrs. Burns was a homemaker and helped her husband operate a shoe repair shop in Abilene prior to retiring. She was an active member of the First Christian Church, Abilene, for several years, and was a Hospice Volunteer and a member of the Retired Enlisted Men's Association Auxiliary.

Surviving are her husband, John of the home; one son, Larry Burns, of the home; two daughters, Gail Burns, England and Patty Wilcox., Larned; one sister Mary Brown, Bozeman, Mont.; two granddaughters Katie and Liz Wilcox, both of Larned; and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one sister. Funeral services will be held at the First Christian Church, Abilene, March 7, 2002, at 1:30 pm with Virgil Eubanks and Rev Ray Stites officiating. Private inurnment will be in the Sutphen Mill Christian Church cemetery. The Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home, Abilene, is in charge of arrangements. The family suggests that friends may contribute to Hospice of Dickinson County, or the First Christian Church Missions Fund in her memory. Contributions may be left at the funeral home.
