Calvin, John

DEATH OF MRS HEPLER'S FATHER

John Calvin who has for the past six years made his home with his daughter, Mrs. George Hepler, died at the Hepler home just south of town Monday, and the body was taken to Manhattan Tuesday for burial, where interment was made beside the wife and two sons who had preceeded him.

For the past fifteen months Mr. Calvin has been confined to his home, yet at no time did he complain and at the time of his death his faith was firm in his Lord and Maker. The life of this kind and noble man is indeed a pleasant memory to the children who survive him, as well as a host of friends.

Mr. Calvin was born Mar 14 1828 at Industry, Penn., and lived in that state for nearly twenty-five years. In 1852 he was united in marriage to Miss Nancy J Vance. To this union nine children were born, seven of whom are still living. Soon after his marriage the deceased moved to Indiana and later to Iowa. When the war broke out Mr. Calvin was among the first to volunteer. He was a flag bearer for General Grant at Vicksburg. But because of sickness contracted in the southern swamps, he was compelled to return home before the close of the war, and in 1878, together with his family they left Iowa and located near Manhattan, Kansas.

Here the family made their home for several years. In 1899, a son, John Calvin an attorney in Topeka, died. In 1901 another son, Rev. N H Calvin died at Olsburg, a small town near Manhattan. In 1906 the wife and mother, was called to her reward, after a long and faithful life. Since the death of his wife, Mr. Calvin has made his home with the youngest daughter, Mrs. George Hepler of this place. Three sons and four daughters still survive the father. They are William, who lives at Manhattan; Ralph of Harrisonville, Ark; and James E., of Fort Cobb, Okla., The daughters are Mrs. A G Marshall, Courtland, Mrs M E Wilkinson, Catalpa, Mrs. Sam Anderson, Manhattan and Mrs George Hepler of this city.
