Campbell, Zackariah

Zackariah Campbell, one of the few last Civil war veterans of this community, died at his home several miles east of this city Wednesday morning at the age of 81.

Campbell came to this state soon after the Civil war and has been a continual resident of this county for the last forty years. He enter the service of the war on the first day of June, 1861, and was a member of Co. E., 25th Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry for three years. He was regimental color bearer from Stone River to Atlanta and was mustered out September 5, 1864.

Mr. Campbell was born in Coles county, Ill. and lived there until he came to Kansas. Mrs. Campbell who survives him was from the same county in Illinois. They were married in 1865, a year after he returned from war.

Mr. Campbell is the father of seven children, five sons and two daughters. Most of them are now residing in this county. They are Joe, and John who live near this city, George at Hymer, Bob at Americus and Zackariah at ElDorado. The daughters are Mrs. J. A. Cooper and Mrs. John Mickeljerd„, both of this county.

The funeral was held at the home Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, Rev: McCulloh of the Methodist church conducting the ceremony. Four old Civil War comrades were present at the funeral to pay tribute to the galIent soldier and to sorrow at the loss of another from the rapidly decreasing list.

Mr. Campbell has been one of the builders of the community and has left gifts without value. To the bereaved ones we extend sincere sympathy.
