Caress, Almary Martin
Mrs. Almary Caress Dies At Son's Home
After Suffering Five Weeks With
Broken Hip Pioneer of State
Passes.
Mrs. Almary Caress of Homestead died Wednesday of last week at the home of her son, Charles Caress, after suffering five weeks with a broken hip. She is one of the old settlers in the Homestead neighborhood and is well known in the southern and western parts of the county.
The funeral services conducted by the Rev. Lynn H. Rupert, were at Homestead. Interment was in the Homestead cemetery.
Almary Martin was born near Springfield, Mo., June 8, 1843. In 1853, she, with her mother, brothers, and sisters came to Kansas Territory and settled near where Iola is now located. On March 9, 1864, she was married to John Butler of that vicinity and to this union four children, William, Margaret, Isaac, and Nettie, were born. Mr. Butler died February 5, 1874. She was then married July 14, 1879, to Peter Caress who lived near Colony in Anderson County. Three children, Lillie, Emma, and Charles, were born to this union.
In August, 1886, they came to Chase County where they have since made their home. Peter Caress passed away July 22, 1922.
Near the age of 16 she united with the Baptist church in Allen County. She was a member there until coming to Chase County when she united with the disbanded Methodist church of Home stead.
She parted from this life at the home of her son, Charles Caress, February 1, 1928, at the. age of 84 years, 7 months, and 14 days. Remaining to mourn her death are five children: William Butler, Lillian Merritt, and Charles Caress of Clements, Isaac Butler of Las Animas, Colorado, and Emma Bolender of Limon, Colorado. One brother, Dallas Martin of St. Joseph, Mo., 18 grandchildren 16 great-grandchildren, and many friends also survive.
