Cartter, Lilah Viller
Mrs. W. H. Cartter died early Thursday morning at her home in Wichita according to a phone message sent by Will Gregory, Jr to Mr. and Mrs. D. K. Cartter.
Mrs. Cartter lived with her daughter, Mrs. C. M. Gregory, and Mr. and Mrs. Will Gregory, in Wichita, wherc they moved from the Gregory Ranch east of this city last spring.
About 6:30 o'clock Thursday morning, Will Gregory phoned to Mr. and Mrs. Carttcr in this city, saying that Mrs.
Cartter was critically and that they did not expect her to live. A little later he phoned again advising of her death.
The funeral arrangements had not been made Thursday morning but it is known that interment will be made in Prairie Grove Cemetery at this place in the family lot of the Cartter family.
Mrs. Cartter was 84 years of age and came to this county with her husband in 1874. Her husband Dr. W H Cartter died in 1904. He was a son of Judge David K Cartter, a former chief justice of the supreme court of the District of Columbia and was for many years a practicing physician of this county in the early days.
Mrs. Cartter is survived by seven children who are David K. Cartter, of this city; Paul Cartter, Mrs. C. M. Gregory and Mrs. Alex Maule, all of Wichita; Harry Cartter, of San Diego, Calif; Mrs. George King, of Springer, New Mexico, and Mrs. Frank Lee, of Port Lavaca, Texas.
Hold Funeral Services for Mrs. W H Cartter
The funeral services for Mrs. W H. Cartter, who died at her home in Wichita early Thursday morning of last week, was held in this city Saturday afternoon.
Judge John Madden, of Wichita, and Rev. E. M. Scott, pasterof the Presbyterian Church of this city, had charge of the service. Judge Madden, a life-long friend of the Cartter family, read the obituary and spoke on the life of Mrs. Cartter.
The service was held at the home of Frank Brown in this city at 2:00 o'clock. Interment was in Pririe Grove cemetery in the lot of the Cartter family.
The pall hearers were sons and grandsons of Mrs. Cartter. They were Paul Cartter, Wm. H. Cartter. William E. Gregory, Alex Maule, and Carter Maulc, all of Wichita and Harry Cartter of San Diego. California.
Mrs. Cartters maiden name was Lilah Villar. She was the daughter of John Villar and Lilah Domingas Viller, and was born May 22, 1849, at Pensacola, Florida. She was 84 years and five months of age.
She was married to Dr. W. H. Cartter when a young woman and the family came to Chase county about the year 1874. Dr. and Mrs. Cartter were the parents of a large family which grew up here. Dr. Cartter was a prominent physician in this county during the early days and also was prominent in the affairs of the county. He wan a son of the late Judge David K. Cartter, a former chief justice of the supreme court of the District of Columbia. Dr. Cartter's death occurred at this place in 1904.
Since Dr. Cartter death, Mrs. Cartter had made her home in this county much of the time but she had spent considerable time in Florida, Texas, and other places with her children and her relatives. Last spring she moved to Wichita with her daughter, Mrs. C. M. Gregory, and her grandson, William E. Gregory, and wife, and her death occurred at their home at 143 North Fountain Avenue.
Mrs. Cartter leaves seven children, Mrs. Frank Lee, of Port Lavaca, Texas; Harry Cartter, of San Diego, California; David K. Cartter, of this city, and Mrs. C. M. Gregory, Mrs. Alex Maule and Paul Cartter, all of Wichita, and Mrs. George King, of Springer, New Mexico.
