Cartter, W. H.
Dr. W. H. Cartter, one of the best known men in Chase County, died at his home, one mile east of this city, Sunday morning after an illness extending over a period of many years, the last sixteen months of which time he has been confined to his bed.
W.H. Cartter was born in Akron Ohio, 66 years ago, was educated at the College of Physicians and surgeons of New York City. At the end of his college course he entered the United States Navy where he served twelve years. He was a member of the Paraguay expedition and the expedition which laid the Atlantic cable.
During the war he was a member of the North Atlantic and Gulf squadrons and served until the war closed, when he returned to Cleveland, Ohio, where he practiced his profession until 1873 when he came to Kansas.
In 1865 he married Miss Lilah Villar of Pensacola, Florida. To this union was born eleven children seven of whom, Mrs. Frank Lee, Mrs. C. M. Gregory, Mrs. George King, Mrs. Alex Maule and Messrs Dave. Paul and Harry Cartter together with his wife survive him.
The Doctor never practiced his profession a great deal Kansas but was always willing, so long as his health would permit, to give his asistance in any difficult case of surgery.

Dr. Cartter was an indulgent father and always believed that nothing was too good for his family and they in turn have always been very kind and attentive to him.
Dr. Cartter's father, Judge D. H. Cartter, chief Justice of the District of Columbia, was a warm personal friend of President Lincoln and made the speech in the National Republican Convention of 1860 which turned the tide in favor of Lincoln for president.
A more kind hearted could not be found and many are the poor and less fortunate people who hve been made comfortable and happy by his benevolence.
The funeral, which was conducted by Zeredetha Lodge No. 80 A. F. & A. M., of which the Doctor was a member, was held from the house Tuesday afternoon. The funeral sermon was preached by Rev. Mr. Russel who paid a high tribute to the Doctor's great deeds of kindness and strong bonds of true friendship which drew him close to his fellowmen. The remains were laid to rest in Praire Grove Cemetery west of this city.
The large number of friends who attended the funeral attested the high esteem in which he was held by those who knew him and shows that he will be greatly missed not only by his family but by everyone in the community.
