Channell, M. W.

Death of M. W. Channell

Last week we published the death of M. W. Channell, but at the time we could learn none of the particulars.

On the morning of the 22d, just before breakfast, the barking of a dog in the corn field attracted the attention of the family and Mr. Channel took his gun (a double-barrel shot gun.) and went out to ascertain the cause. Shortly after, the report of a gun was heard by the family, followed in a few minutes by another shot.

Breakfast was eaten and although the father's absence was wondered at, no anxiety was felt by the family until the children were preparing for school, when one of the children, a girl, suddenly commenced crying and expressed the belief that some accident had befallen her father. To pacify the child, the oldest boy went in search of the father, carrying an ax with him. Going into the corn field he found the dog, who had a coon at bay. The coon was soon dispatched and the boy started to continue the search for his father.

Attracted by a smoke, he went to another part of the field, where he found the body of his father, the clothing on which was burned off and the flesh literally baked. An examination of the body showed that a charge of shot had entered the lower part of the abdomen and, passing through the heart. The gun was also found, the stock of which bore scratches evidently made by the coon.

It is supposed that when Mr. Channel found the dog, whose barking had attracted his attention, it was engaged with the coon; that Channel fired one shot at the coon but was afraid to fire another for fear of hitting the dog; that, to assist the dog, he attempted to use the butt of the gun on the coon and while doing so the gun was discharged.
