Chapel, Mrs. Dwight
DEATH OF MRS. DWIGHT CHAPEL
Mrs. Dwight Chapel died at her home in this city suddenly at 8:00 o’clock last Saturday morning, Aug. 25th death being due to heart trouble from which Mrs. Chapel had suffered for several years.
The funeral services were held from the Methodist church at 3:00 o’clock Monday afternoon, Rev. Lynn H. Rupert, the pastor, preaching the sermon. Interment was then made in Prairie Grove Cemetery.
There were few women who had lived here longer as a constant resident than had Mrs. Chapel. Born at Greene, New York, she came to this county with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Spencer, in the late “seventies” when a young woman.
Several years later she was married to Mr. Dwight Chapel, this marriage occurring March 9th, 1881. The wedding took place in the west part of this city at the Spencer home. For the forty-seven intervening years Mrs. Chapel had lived here within a few blocks of the scene of her marriage.
One daughter, Chattie, was born to this union and she with her father survive and are the only close relatives. One brother, Wm. Spencer, Jr., the only brother Mrs. Chapel had died when a boy of nine years.
Mrs. Chapel was a woman beloved by all who knew her. She was a real home-maker and was devoted to her home and family.
Her death was indirectly due to a severe siege of influenza which she suffered last winter. As a result of this her health had been weakened to such an extent that the frequently suffered sinking spells when death had been close.
Her ailment, however, had not weakened her so she was compelled to be in bed and she had been up and even doing work about her home until the very day before her death, early Saturday morning she had a sinking spell and was laid in her bed by her husband and daughter, Chattie. Mr. Chapel had hurried for a physician when he detected her critical condition. She passed away, quietly and peacefully soon after the doctor arrived.
