Clough, Lillie A. McMillen

The sudden death Mrs. Richard Clough which occurred on the Clough farm in the northeast part of the county Friday evening has brought deep regret to the many friends and neighbors of the Clough family.

Mr. and Mrs. Clough had moved from this city to their farm only the week before. As he had not yet disposed of all of the goods in his hardware store which he started to close out some time ago he had been driving from the farm each day.

On Monday, Mrs. Clough had not felt well but was up most of the day and was engaged in her house work. Mr. Clough came to this city and was in his store part of the day. Thursday morning Mrs. Clough seemed much worse and did not seem to have the use of one arm. From that time on her condition became critical and her death occurred about 8:00 o‘clock on Friday evening due to a paralytic stroke which had come gradually.

Mrs. Clough’s maiden name was Lillie A. McMillen and she was born in Stark County, Illinois, April 27th, 1863, being 66 years of age.

She was married to Richard Clough Dec. 10th, 1889 at Charter Oak, Iowa, and from Iowa the family moved to this county in the fall of 1905.

Chase County has since been the home of Mr. and Mrs. Clough. Most of the time he has been engaged in farming and formerly lived on Prairie Hill, although the family lived in this city a number of years during the time Jessie and Vera, their children, were attending school. For a number of years also Mr. Clough ran a hardware store at Strong City. About a year ago Mr. and Mrs. Clough moved from their Prairie Hill farm to where he opened a hardware store.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Clough is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Vera Layton, Ponca City, Oklahoma, and her son, Jessie Clough, chief mail clerk of the Veterans' Bureau at Washington, D. C., both of whom were here for the funeral.

The funeral was held at the Methodist Church in this city and was conducted by Rev. Braden. Interment was in Prairie Grove cemetery.
