Carrie E., daughter of Gen, and Lamenda 0, Houston, was born May, 1st, 1846, at Knoxville, Tennessee, and passed away at Las Animas, Colorado, June 5th, 1924.

At the age of four she, with her parents, moved to Iowa where she resided until the spring of 1859, when she came to Chase county, Kansas, and in 1909 moved to Las Animas, Colorado.

Of a family of nine children all have preceeded her in death except one brother, Charles E. Houston, of Cottonwood Falls.

February 11th, 1866, she was married to Henry Collett, who died in December 1904, and to this union seven children were born, two having died in infancy. Mrs. Grace Hemry passed away February 27th, 1917, at her home at Gallatin, Mo. The living children are: G. F. Collett of Basehor, Kansas, Fred Collett of Marion, Mrs. Lewis Umberger of Elmdale and Miss Lizzie Collett of Las Animas, Colorado.

She was one of the early settlers, having lived in Chase county fifty years, 38 years of that time being spent on the old homestead at Elk, where she reared her family to manhood and womanhood.

Mrs. Collett was one of the pioneer educators of Chase county, having taught for a number of years previous to her marriage in various parts of the county. She was baptized in the Presbyterian faith in early childhood and her entire life was characterized by kindly christian deeds. She was a devoted wife and loving mother, ever mindful of others; the rich and poor alike became the object of her ministrations and she was never happier than when performing some labor of love. Surely a good woman has gone out from among us---a, useful life is ended, but her influence will live on.
