Comer, John
John Comer died at his home near Elk on December 10, 1900, after a lingering illness, and the remains were laid at rest in the cemetery at that place on Wednesday, December 12. Rev. McKenzie of Elmdale, conducted the services, and the funeral was largely attended by relatives and friends of the family. About four months ago he was attacked with a severe case of asthma, from which he suffered greatly, but his condition was not even considered serious until about a week previous to his death.
He was born in Dublin, Ireland, on February 28, 1832, and was 68 years, 9 months and 27 days old at the time of his demise.
He came to America with his parents when two years old, locating in Pennsylvania where he lived until he attained his manhood. A number of years was then spent in traveling over the country, he working at his trade, that of a machinist. At the breaking out of the Civil war he enlisted in the 12th Inft. Penn. Vol., and later served in the 21st Cav. Penn. Vol. from which he was transferred to the Signal Corps, and served there until the close of the war, receiving an honorable discharge.
He was married to Hallie Waddell at Crawfordsville, Ind., Nov 19, 1872, and by this union four children were born, of which one died in infancy.
His wife and three daughters, Mrs. Frank Calvert, Misses Nellie and Ruby Comer survive him. Mr. Comer was an honest industrious citizen, honored and esteemed by his neighbors and friends. The entire community extends sympathy to the bereaved ones.
