Conaway, Charles
The following, from the Des Moines Register and Leader, is a brief sketch of Dr. Charles D Conaway of Brooklyn, Iowa, uncle of Dr. C. L. Conaway of this city, and for whom the latter was named:
Dr. Charles D. Conaway, who died at Brooklyn Saturday morning, was the oldest practitioner in Poweshiek county. His brother-in law, Dr. I. N Busby, has been in Iowa longer, but being also a minister of the Methodist church, he has not been engaged continuously in the practice of medicine. Dr. Conaway came to Brooklyn in 1867 and became the first principal of the Brooklyn public schools. He studied medicine under Dr. John Conaway, who represented Poweshiek and Tama counties in the senate of the Fifteenth and Sixteenth general assemblies, and with his brother-in-law, Dr. I N Busby, he attended the Cincinnati Eclectic Medical College and then formed a partnership with his tutors, Drs. Conaway and Busby, which continued until the death of Dr. John Conaway, May 3, 1883.
He was born near Cadiz, Ohio, Sept. 25, 1834, and was of Irish and Scotch descent. He attended the Hopedale institute and the Haysville college. While at Hopedale he was a classmate of George L. Custer. He was a member of the Ohio state militia which saw active service during the Civil war in preventing raids by Morgan and others.
Dr. Conaway was married in 1868 to Miss Julia Ann Busby They have two sons, Dr John W Conaway of Hartley, Iowa, and Dr. Charles B., who has been associated with his father in the practice of medicine, and a daughter, Mrs. Charley Bever of Brooklyn. One daughter, born July 4, 1876, and named Jennie Independence, died in 1890.
Dr. Conaway became a Methodist in 1849, an Odd Fellow in 1863, and a Mason in 1871. He was a Knight Templar of the Newton commandary. He was a quiet man, unassuming, unselfieh to the extreme, and he goes to his grave without an enemy in the world. His ambition in life has been strictly in the line of his profession. While he has been an active republican and been associated with the law and, order association he has not been an aggressive man in a way to make enemies. He has been the ideal home doctor bringing sunshine and cheer to, the sick room. While be has maintained an office in town he was seldom in it. He loved the sunshine and the air and preferred to visit the sick rather than have the sick visit him. He rode constantly having a practice of three counties.
The family to which Dr. Conaway belonged is a family of physicians. There have been thirty-eight members who have chosen this as their profession. One of the nephews, Dr. Charles D Busby, at Brooklyn, is associated in the practice and in the management of the hospital with Dr. Evans, a son of Judge Evans, who was nominated for supreme judge by the republican state convention Sept. 9. Dr. A. B. Conaway, a cousin, of Marshalltown, who represented Mahaska county in the senate for two terms, has a son and three brothers whoare actively engaged in the practice of medicine.
The funeral services were held at Brooklyn on Tuesday.
