Coons, Mary Katherine

Mary Katherine Cubine Coons, 89, died at her home, April 23, 2002. Mary and her sister, Helen, left school at the age of 11 and 12 to get jobs to help support their family of seven children. Mary never got to return to school.

In 1933 she married Homer Duane Coons, from White City, while he was living and working in Kansas City. Two sons, James and Robert, were born. Mary and Homer continued to help both of their younger brothers and sisters with home and board. Mary was a homemaker through the 30's and 40's until Homer went into serve two stays as a Navy Seabee in WWII. During Homer's service in WWII, Robert and Jim came to White City to live with relaltives, Ed and Evelyn Coons.

The family was eventually reunited in White City where Homer and John Kohler began a long term partnership in Coons-Kohler Auto TV and Appliance. Homer and Mary continued helping the family. In their mid forties they became adoptive parents of three months old twins, Terra and Tanya, born in 1954. Mary was preceded in death by her husband; son, Robert E. Coons; grandson, Lonnie Coons, four sisters, Maxine Moore Holfiens, Helen Nilson, Martha Crawford Hernandez, Louise Taylor; two brothers, Jim Cubine and John Cubine; her mother, father and stepfather, Albert Wild. She is survived by her son James Coons, Holden, Mo.; daughters, Terra Coons and Tanya Coons-Redig, White City; a brother Charles Cubine, Titusville, Fla.; four granchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
