Cooper, Edgar Vinson
Edgar V. Cooper, 74, died Friday, Jan. 27, 2006, after a farming accident near his home in the Saffordville area of Chase County.
Edgar Vinson Cooper, the son of Elmer and Orea Maddox Cooper, was born Nov. 15, 1931, at the family home south of Saffordville. He graduated from Toledo Township High School in 1950.
He married Florence Jeannine North May 24, 1953, in the Saffordville Methodist Church.
He was a member of the Saffordville United Methodist Church and a member of the American Quarter Horse Association. He was a quarter horse breeder for over 50 years. He, also, worked with his father-in-law, Stanley North, at the North Grain Company from 1955 until
the closing of the operation.
He served on the U.S.D. 284, Chase County Board of Education for 12 years, was on the Rural Water District #1 Board, a 4-H Project Leader and a volunteer member of the Saffordville Rural Fire Department.
He was the first Kansan to participate in a National High School Rodeo. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict.
He is survived by his wife; one son, James R. Cooper of Emporia; four daughters, Nancy Holland of Redlands, Calif., LuBeth Whitaker of Toledo Township, Janet Cannon of Emporia and Wanda Macy of Alta Vista; one brother, James H. Cooper of Emporia; 11 grandchildren;
and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Robert “Pete” Cooper and Joe “Bud” Cooper; and one sister, Dorthea Duncan Belik.
Services were held Tuesday, Jan. 31, at the Toledo Township Community Center. The Rev. Beverly Meadows and The Rev. Nancy Harris co-officiated. A military graveside service was conducted at Hillside Cemetery by a Fort Riley Honor Guard.
