Coverdill, J W
Mr. J. W. Coverdill died at his home in the southwest part of this city Tuesday night. His illness had extended over a period of only five or six days and death which has come so suddenly is a severe shock to his family and friends.
Up until Thursday morning of last week Mr. Coverdill was apparently enjoying usual health and on that morning he had planned a trip to the country. He did not go, however, and the same day he was taken with a severe chill which quickly took the form of pneumonia. His condition rapidly become critical and Tuesday night, he passed away.
Although Mr. Coverdill has not lived in Cottonwood Falls quite a year yet he is known by many and he and his family have made many friends. He was an honorable, upright man and we believe one of the best men we have ever known. His character was spotless and his benevolence and kindness was such as few men possess.
Mr. Coverdill was born April 4th, 1838, near Indianapolis, Indiana. In 1876, he moved to Illinois where he lived until 1879, when he came to Kansas. He located in Dickinson county near Chapman and there continued to live until a year ago when he and bis wife and daughter moved to Cottonwood Falls.
Mr. Coverdill has been a farmer and stockraiser all his life.
Besides his wife he leaves seven children--one daughter and six sons who are living: His son, J W Coverdill Jr. who lives near Elmdale is well known here as is his daughter who lives at the family home. His other sons live in South Dakota.
The funeral was held at the home at 2:00 o'clock this afternoon. Rev. Alexander Gilmore preached the sermon and the remains wer laid to rest in Prairie Grove Cemetery.
