Cox, W. H.
One of Chase County’s pioneers, W. H. Cox, died Monday night at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. S. Faister, southeast of Cedar Point. The funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o‘clock in the Christian church at Matfield Green, the Rev. E. M. Scott of Cottonwood Falls being in charge.
At the time of his death, Mr. Cox had lived in this county more than 62 years, having with his wife and family, come here in May, 1866. They homesteaded the farm two miles southwest of Matfield Green and lived there until about 25 years ago when they sold the farm. For a number of years Mr. and Mrs. Cox made their home with their daughter, Mrs. Foister, and family. Mrs. Cox died about three years ago.
Mr. Cox had not been in bad health and the day of his death he ate three meals. His daughter noticed that his breathing was different than usual when she went to his room before she went to bed but she thought he would be all right. At about 11:30 o’clock he died.
William Harvey Cox was born October 2, 1840, at Bolivar, Polk County, Mo. He was married in 1861 to Lucretia Perkins and six years later moved overland with, an ox team to a homestead southwest of Matfield Green.
He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. J. S. Foister of Cedar Point, Mrs. J. J. Riggs of Newton, and by one son, J. W. Cox of Cottonwood Falls.
He was a member of the Christian church for years.
A quartet composed of Mrs. Lawrence Rogler, Miss Orpha Bocook, Everett Bocook and T. E. Thorne, accompanied by Mrs. Harry Hankins, sang at the funeral services. Pallbearers were Riley Underwod, Levi Jones, Halsey Carpenter, Ed Crocker, Willlam Wagoner and Foster Swift. Interment was in the Matfield Green cemetery.
