Death of Mrs. Crawford

LUCY ELLEN WILLIAMS CRAWFORD died in Cottonwood Falls - Chase County, Kansas May 30, 1914 - buried in Prairie Grove Cemetery

Mrs. Lucy Ellen Crawford who had been ill at her home in the south part of town for several months, died last Saturday afternoon, May 30, 1914. There were present at her death three daughters Mrs. Jas. Cahoone, Mrs. Lawrence Gustin and Mrs. Effie Fillmore. Three other daughters from Colorado were here several weeks ago when Mrs Crawford's condition became critical but had returned to their home and could not attend the funeral.

Mrs. Crawford's maiden name was Lucy Ellen Williams and she was born in Lawrence county, Indiana, March 5th 1847. She was married to Elijah Crawford in 1863 and to this union eight children were born, seven daughters and one son. Two children, James and Pearl are dead but their other daughters, together with their father survive. They are Mrs. Jas. Cahoone and Mrs. Lawrence Gustin of this place; Mrs. Effie Fillmore of Elmdale; Mrs. Bessie Punteny and Mrs. Clara Johnson of Bristol, Colo. and Mrs. Anna Gottbehuet of Pueblo, Colo. The Crawford family moved to Kansas in 1872, first locating in Marion County where they resided until about 1887, then they came to this county. For many years they lived on what is now the Bickel farm on Spring Creek.

At the age of seven years, Mrs. Crawford united with the Church of Christ and had been a faithful and earnest member to her death. Her friends and acquaintances in this city are many and her death brings sorrow to all.

The funeral was held at 3:00 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the family home, Rev. K.S.Bennett, pastor of the Church of Christ preaching the sermon after which the remains were laid to rest in Prairie Grove Cemetery. Besides the husband and six daughters who survive, there are also left 27 grandchildren and 5 great grand children to which the friends of the community give their sympathy. As a kind woman and loving mother, Mrs. Crawford's memory will never be forgotten.
