Crouch, John M.
Mr. J. M. Crouch, superintendant of the County Farm at Elmdale for the past ten years, died at his home at the County Farm at noon last Tuesday, death being caused from cancer. Mr. Crouch was nearly 77 years of age and was one of the best known residents of Chase county.
A short funeral service was held at the Methodist church in Elmdale, Wednesday morning after which the body was taken to Saffordville on No. 114. The funeral was held there at 10:00 o'clock this morning after which interment was made in the Toledo cemetery.
Mr. Crouch's death will bring sorrow to a very large number of number of people this county who have known him for so many years.

The death of John M. Crouch at his home near Elmdale removes one more of Chase county's best known residents.
Mr. Crouch died at the age of 75 years, 11 months and 5 days, and for the past ten years had been superintendent of the County Farm. He located here 35 years ago, engaging in farming and stock-raising previous to his superintendency of the County Farm.
Besides his wife he is survived by six children who are Col. C. Crouch, of Saffordville;
William Crouch of Matfield Green; James Crouch of Portland, Oregon; Mrs. Henry Moore of Loving, New Mexico; Mrs. Henry Hatton of Matrus, New Mexico; and Mrs. Herman Hartig of Elmdale.
Mr. Crouch was born April 4, 1839, near West Carlisle, Cashoston county, Ohio.
In the year 1861 on December 24th, he was united in marriage to Miss Hester Farall. They were the parents of seven children, four of whom are now dead. The three living are William, James and Col. C. Crouch.
In 1886, his wife died six years after the family moved to Chase county.
Mr. Crouch was then married to Sadie J. Turner. Six children were born to them, three of whom are living. They are Mrs. Herman Hartig of Elmdale, and Mrs. Henry Moore and Mrs. Henry Hatton both of New Mexico. He is also survived by three sisters and one brother who live in Ohio.
On coming to Chase county, Mr. Crouch located on a farm at Saffordville which was his home until about ten years ago when he was appointed superintendent of the County Farm and then moved to Elmdale.
He was a man whose strict integrity and love of justice made those who knew him his truest friends. He was a kind husband and father and it may be said that but few men possessed a greater benevolence for his fellow men than did Mr. Crouch. In reverses and discouragements, he never lost his hopeful disposition. Indeed he was an example of cheerfulness itself to those around him. His death brings sorrow to many. He was a good man and his life's work was well rounded out. It may truly be said of him that during his more than three score and ten years, he has made the world better and life happier for many. His memory will always live.
The funeral was held Friday, March 12th, Mr. Fitch of Elmdale preaching the sermon. The beautiful tributes spoken were most fitting while the floral offerings showed the love and esteem in which the deceased was held.
