Cunningham, James Albert
BERT CUNNINGHAM GONE
James Albert Cunningham was born on Fox Creek, Chase Co., Mar 24 1882 and departed this life at his home in Herington, Kans., March 10, 1919 being not quite
37 years of age at the time of his death.
This community was greatly grieved to learn of the death of "Bert" Cunningham last Monday after only a week's illness with the influenza. Bert had only lived a few short years but his years had been well lived and to know Bert was to like and respect him for his kindly manner to all.
He spent his boyhood years among us and at the age of twenty one years went to braking on the Santa Fe railroad running out of Emporia for four years then going to Herington, Kans., where he has been a conductor on the Rock Island for a number of years. He was a steady industrious young man on whom the Company, or anyone could rely and he will be sadly missed by his fellow workmen.
May 9th, 1907, he was married to Iva M. Lacey of Manchester, Kansas., at Junction City, Kans. and they have since lived at Herington. He has been a member of the First Methodist Church at Herington for the past 9 years. He was also a member of the Order of Railway Conductor and Knights and Ladies of Security. He was taken seriously ill with the flu and rapidly grew worse and no power on earth could save him.
His parents, sisters and brothers were sent for and were present during his last days and hours and he passed on from among us to await the coming of his loved ones.
Funeral services were held at his home in Herington, Tuesday, then the remains were brought to the home of his parents in this city, where services were held at 2:30 Wednesday pm. The floral offerings were many and beautiful and were tokens of the love and respect all held for the deceased. Interment was made in Prairie Grove cemetery beside his grandparents.
He leaves to miss him his wife, Mrs. Iva Cunningham of Herington, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J H Cunningham, two brothers, Joe of Camp Funston, and Ray of Strong, and three sisters, Misses Georgetta and Eva of this city, and Mrs. L D Wirth of Emporia, besides numerous other relatives and friends.
