Duncan, Mark A

Mark A. Duncan, 39, died Thursday, July 8, 2004, in Topeka, the victim of a shooting. The Mass of Christian Burial was Monday, July 12, 2004, at St. Matthew's Catholic Church. Burial was in Hillside Cemetery in Saffordville.

Mr. Duncan was born Feb. 6, 1965, in Wellington, the son of Gerald and Norma Armstrong Duncan. Mr. Duncan graduated from Emporia State University in 1987 after earning a bachelor's degree in earth science. He married Lisa Brown on Sept. 8, 1990, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. They were the parents of two children, Kimberly Nicole Duncan and Michael Alan Duncan.

Mr. Duncan was the chief of compliance and enforcement for the Bureau of Waste Management of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. He was a registered geologist and the Kansas representative to the Midwest Environmental Association. Additionally, he owned Second-Chance Woods, which found new uses for wood that was otherwise destined to be scrapped. His business was recognized with several awards by recycling and environmental groups. He also volunteered as a soccer coach.

In addition to his wife and children, he is survived by his parents, who live in Saffordville; a sister, Jeanie Copeland of Wellington; and a brother, Gary Duncan of Oklahoma City.
