Gaines, Virgene E Hotchkiss

Virgene Emily Gaines, 88, formerly of Cottonwood Falls and Strong City, died Saturday, Dec. 31, 2005, at Newman Regional Health in Emporia.

Virgene Emily Hotchkiss, the daughter of Ned and Nellie Washington Hotchkiss, was born June 21, 1917, at Burlingame.

She and Charles O. Gaines were married Jan. 12, 1941, in Oskaloosa. He died June 10, 1998. She worked as a legal secretary for attorney, Karl Masoner, for many years. Before her retirement, she was the Clerk of the District Court in Chase County.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church (USA) in Cottonwood Falls and an active member of the Republican party. She was an active supporter of the Burnley Library in Cottonwood Falls and the Burlingame Library in Burlingame.

She is survived by one daughter, Cleryl Mauderly of Albuquerque, N.M.; a sis¬ter, Anita Archibald formerly of Wichita; two grand-daughters; and three great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Neal Hotchkiss and James Hotchkiss; five sisters, Christine Arnold, Harriett Hotchkiss, Maxine Adams, Esther Denny and Olive Anstaett.

Services were Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2006, at the First Presbyterian Church (USA) in Cottonwood Falls with The Rev. Pat Ireland officiating. Interment was in Burlingame Cemetery, Burlingame.
