Greenleaf, Phoebe Sharp Purcell

Was probably the oldest person in Canadian County (Oklahoma)- A Native of Tennessee

Mrs. Phoebe Sharp Greenleaf probably the oldest person in Canadian county, died at the home of her daughter, Mar 11, 1932. Mrs. J. A. Malone, 10 miles southeast of Geary, OK. On Friday Mrs. Greenleaf's age was 97 years and 21 days.

Funeral services were conducted at the Mennonite church here, Sunday afternoon, by Rev. Henry Funch. Burial was in Geary cemetery.

Mrs. Greenleaf was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Sharp and was born near Knoxville, Tennessee on February 20, 1835. She moved with her parents to Missouri when she was 16 years old and from there to Kansas.

She was united in marriage to Henry Greenleaf September 8,1868 and to them were born three daughters all of whom survive, as follows. D.C. Bray of Hinton (sp.), Mrs. Annie Lister of El Reno, and Mrs. J.A. Malone of Geary. Two sisters, Mrs. Nancy Davis of El Monte, California and Mrs. Sarah Penrod of Wichita, Kansas., nine grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren.

The deceased was converted at the age of 15 and later joined the United Brethren Church. She lived a true Christian life until death.

Comments: Pheobe Sharp was first married to Joseph Purcell and they had one child, Mary Purcell, born January 12, 1861 and died September 2, 1905. Mary Purcell married George W. Lawrence.
