Hawkins, Claude W

Lifelong Resident of Clements vicinity dies:

Funeral services for Claude W. Hawkins, 75, who passed away Monday in Emporia hospital are held today.

Claude W. Hawkins, a lifelong resident of the Clements community, passed away Monday in the Newman Memorial Hospital, Emporia, where he had been a patient for the last ten days.

Funeral services were conducted this Wednesday morning, April 21, at 9:30 o'clock at the Brown funeral home. The Rev. Clarence Harder, pastor of the Cottonwood Falls Methodist Church, was in charge. Robert Way sang, accompanied by Miss Mariabelle Simmons.

The pall bearers were Arthur Crawford, D. L. Crawford, Chriss Crawford, John A. Crawford, Lee Byram and Frank Byram. Interment was in the Clements Cemetery.

Claude W. Hawkins was born July 19, 1878, at Clements, Kansas, and passed away April 19, 1954, He was a Life Member of the Kansas State Historical Society and was President of the Chase County Historical Society which was founded in 1940. He helped to organize the community and school library and for a number of years was its librarian.

Mr. Hawkins is survived by his wife, Celia, of the home; his son, Frank L. Hawkins and wife of Bel Air, Maryland; one grandson, and many other relatives and friends.

Contributor's Note: Claude W. Hawkins was grandson of John Wesley Hawkins and Rebecca Ann (Best) Hawkins who came to Wise County (Chase County), Kansas in 1857. His mother, Rebecca Jane Hawkins, was resident of Chase County from 1857. Claude married Celia Crawford of Chase County in 1902. Claude and G. W. Starkey contributed the map of Pioneer & Indian Trails & Rivers & Streams in Chase County Historical Sketches, Vol. I, 1940.)
