Hawkins, Fred
NATIVE OF COUNTY IS TAKEN IN DEATH
Fred Hawkins, a native and lifelong resident of Chase County, died at 9:15 p.m., Monday, Oct. 21st, in the Chase County Nursing Center, Cottonwood Falls, where he had been a resident since December 7, 1973. A retired farmer, he had lived in Cottonwood Falls the last 14 years.
Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Thursday in the Brown-Bennett Funeral Home with the Rev. Steve Spear, pastor of the Cottonwood Falls United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Clements Cemetery.
Mr. Hawkins, the son of Isaac Richard and Mary Anna Hawkins, was born at Clements on December 9, 1880, and he was married to Mary Amy Green on March 28, 1906, in the Presbyterian Church in Clements. He had been engaged in farming all of his adult life until moving to town in 1960.
Surviving him are one son, Richard Hawkins, Garnett; one daughter, Mrs. George (Bertha) Dawson, Cottonwood Falls; two brothers, Alfred Hawkins, of the Chase County Nursing Center, and Rev. Sidney Hawkins, Mabank, Tex.; seven grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, who died in 1965; two sisters, Alta and Estella; two brothers, Ralph and Roy.

Note: Fred's daughter Bertha told me that Fred and Alfred were in a room together at the nursing center. Fred was 94 yrs of age when he died. His photo (taken prior to 1906) with his very classy new team of horses and buggy, appeared in the Leader-News Out of Our Past" in the 1990's courtesy or his daughter.
