Hewitt, Marie G Nicholas

Marie G. Hewitt, 91, of Erie, died Sept. 13, 2001, at the Manor Nursing Home in Independence, where she had been a resident nearly three years. She was born Oct. 13, 1909, on a farm northwest of Erie to John W. and Artie M. (Naff) Nicholas. During her childhood the family moved to a farm in the Ladore township. She graduated from Parsons High Schol and Parsons Junior College.

On Oct. 13, 1927, she married Thomas C. Hewitt. After their marriage they lived on a farm north of Parsons. In 1936 they moved to Grand Junction, Colo., and in 1944 returned to Erie. Mr. Hewitt died Jan. 1, 1959. Mrs. Hewitt was employed as a lab technician for the Mid American Dairy for 30 years.

She was a member of the First Christian Church of Erie and was a 50 year member and past matron of the Erie Chapter No. 136, Order of Eastern Star. She also had held a grand appointive office in the grand chapter of Eastern Star. She enjoyed ceramics, flowers and quilting.

Survivors include three sons, John Hewitt of Owasso, Okla., Don Hewitt of Cottonwood Falls, and Delbert Hewitt of Billings, Mont,; two daughters, Dorothy Springer of Independence and Phyllis Baker of Pleasant Hill, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandsons; three step grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; and one step-great-great grandson. Proceeding her in death were a sister, Bertha Shields; a grandson, Tommy Hewitt; a granddaughter, Peggy Hewitt; a great-great-grandson, Nathan Gilmore; and two step-great-grandons, Jack and Paul Voth.

Funeral services were held Sept. 17, 2001, at the First Christian Church of Erie with Dr. Jere Wells and Rev. Fred Jordan officiating. Burial was in the East Hill Cemetery at Erie. Memorials are suggested to the First Christian Church in Erie.
