DEATH OF E.A. HILDEBRAND

The funeral services for E.A. Hildebrand, early day resident of the county and one of the founders of Strong City, was held at Prairie Grove Cemetery Monday morning, June 22nd.

Mr. Hildebrand’s death had occurred suddenly in Denver on Thursday, June 17th, as a result of a heart attack, it is believed. The Masonic Lodge of this place had charge of the funeral as Mr. Hildebrand was one of the early members of this lodge. He became a member of Zeredatha Lodge in 1875.

During recent years Mr. Hildebrand who was in his 82nd year, had made his home in Denver. Last Thursday evening, his son, Charles Hildebrand, had been with his father during the afternoon and took him to his hotel, the Barth House, that evening. At about 11:00 o’clock the next morning, Mr. Hildebrand was found dead in a bath tub in his room. The water which had been turned into the tub was still running. It is believed that Mr. Hildebrand was stricken sometime Thursday evening as he was preparing to take a bath.

Mr. Hildebrand was born December 13th, 1840 at West Liberty, Ohio. There he grew to manhood, coming to Chase county in the “sixties”. He located at Strong City and with Dr. Wm. Cartter, John Emslie and Geo. O. Hildebrand, his brother, organized Emslie’s Addition to Strong City. This was in 1879 about seven years after Strong City had been founded by the Cottonwood Town Company. For many years Mr. Hildebrand was to be one of the leading business men of that city. Mr. Hildebrand was cashier of the Strong City Bank, and he and his brother were owners of a hardware store and lumber and coal yards. In fact, he was connected with a number of the important business enterprises of Strong City during its early days. He was also city councilman for many years.

When Mr. Hildebrand came to Strong City one of his first jobs was in the store of Swayze & Edwards. Mr. Hildebrand remained in Chase County until the year 1889 when he went to Kansas City but returned to this county in 1893 this time locating at Bazaar [should be Matfield Green] where he operated a lumber yard. From Bazaar he went to Oklahoma at the opening of the “strip” and lived there for a good many years where he was engaged in business. For the past eight years he had lived in Denver.

There are few men who were more actively associated with the early days of this county and who played a more important part in the early business affairs of the county. Chet Woodring, of this city, took his first job with Mr. Hildebrand, sweeping out his store and building here. Chet says that was the first money he ever earned.

Besides a host of friends and other relatives, Mr. Hildebrand leaves his daughter, Mrs. Nita Brownson, of Kansas City, MO; Chas. Hildebrand, of Denver; Richard Hildebrand, of Chickasha, Oklahoma; Eric Hildebrand, of Pryor Oklahoma, and Major Harvey [sic] Hildebrand, who has been stationed with the U.S. Army in China.
