Howard, Donald M

Donald M. "Bus" Howard, 75, of Williamsburg died Sept. 28, 2001, at Ransom Memorial Hospital in Ottawa.

He was born Aug. 26, 1926, at Strong City, the son of Fred and Ann Marie (Crocker) Howard. He grew up in the Matfield Green and Strong City areas, where his father managed the Z-Bar Ranch near Strong City. He attended schools at Strong City, graduating from Strong City High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy shortly after graduation from high school and served aboard a U.S. Navy Aircraft carrier during the latter part of World War II. Upon his discharge he attended Kansas State University and studied veterinary medicine and played football for a couple of years.

Bus went back to the Strong City area and worked for his father on the Z-Bar Ranch and later for the Adams Cattle Company Ranch near Maple Hill. He moved to the Williamsburg area and managed the Silkville Ranch for several years. He moved to the Kansas City area and resided in Bonner Springs for several years and was employed as a heavy equipment operator working through the Local Operating Engineers International Union #101. He worked in heavy construction as an operator on various projects in the Kansas City, Springfield and Warrensburg areas. After his retirement in 1996 he moved back to Williamsburg and continued working as a heavy equipment operator for the City of Williamsburg and Rubick Construction.

He was a member of the Williamsburg and United Methodist Church and the Local Operating Engineers International Union #101. In earlier years he rodeoed and continued his interest and love of the sport for the rest of his life. He also enjoyed raising cattle and caring for his horses.

On Oct 15, 1972, he married Lanore Veix at Olathe. He is survived by his wife of the home; three sons, Rich Howard of Williamsburg, Mike Howard of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Mick Melvin of Iola; five daughters, Karen Rodriguez of Dallas, Texas, Julie Fox of Kansas City, Susan Natchgal of Iola, Carol Johnson of Williamsburg and Kathy Letourneau of Aurora one sister, Nancy Cahoone of Richardson, Texas; one brother, Fred "Sonny" Howard II of Harveyville; 23 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

He is preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Robert"Bob" Howard who died in World War II; and one sister, Pat McLinden. Funeral Services were held Oct. 2, 2001, at the United Methodist Church in Williamsburg with Rev. Gail Bower officiating. Interment followed in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Williamsburg. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital and may be sent in care of the Lamb-Roberts-Heise Funeral Home P O Box 14, Ottawa, Kan. 66067.
