Hules, Phoebe

Mrs. Phoebe Hulse, mother of Mrs. Ella Hulett, died in this city, last Saturday evening at 10:30 o'clock at the Hulett home. The funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the M. E. Church after which interment was made in Prairie Grove cemetery west of this city.

Mrs. Hulse was 78 years of age. She was born in Indiana, April 7th, 1848, and came to Chase county 65 years ago. This county had been her home for most of the time since she emigrated here. Her husband who was John Hulse, a veteran of the Civil War died about two years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Hulse had spent some time at the Soldiers Home before his death. When Mr. and Mrs. Hulse first came to Chase county they located on Peyton Creek, taking a home stead. They were here during the grass-hopper year when all crops were taken by the hoppers.

Mrs. Hulse was a member of the Methodist church, having become a, member of this church at Matfield many years ago.

Mrs. Hulse's maiden name was Phoebe Ellen Bourks. She was married to John A. Hules at Cortherville, Indiana, when she was 23 years of age. To this union six children were born, three girls and three boys. These are:-- Mrs. Mattie Bigger, of Waketa, Oklahoma; Him Hules, of Huston, California; Mrs. Alberta Hulett, of this city; Frank Hules, of Porterville, California; Mrs. EmmaHayes, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Lue Hules, whose address is unknown.
