Jeffrey, George Drummond

George Drummond Jeffrey, 83, died Tuesday, June 22, 2004, at the Holiday Resort, Emporia.

The son of Ferd and Agnes Drummond Jeffrey, he was born Oct. 27, 1920, on a farm near Elmdale. He graduated from Elmdale Rural High School and the Salt City Business College in Hutchinson.

He married Marjorie Elaine Moore on Oct. 29, 1944, at the First Baptist Church in Hutchinson. She survives.

He worked for the War Department in Washington D.C., before he was inducted into the U.S. Army. He served in the Army for three and a half years, first with a transport regiment on the Alaska Highway and later with the Postal Detachment P.O.E. in New Orleans, La. After his military service in World War II, he worked as the benefit payment examiner in the finance division of the Veterans Administration in Wichita. He later was a clerk at the U.S. Post Office in Emporia until he retired in 1975. He received the Superior Accomplishment award for his work at the post office.

Mr. Jeffrey was a member of the First Baptist Church. He also was a member of the American Association of Retired Persons.

He is also survived by a son, Michael K. Jeffrey of Fairbanks, Alaska. Two brothers and three sisters died earlier.

Funeral services were held June 25, 2004, at the Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia. The service was conducted by Pastor Donna Coon, First Baptist Church. Interment was in Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Emporia. Memorials contributions to the church or Hand in Hand Hospice may be sent in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box 175, Emporia, KS 66801.
