Death of Macy Johnson
The community of Elmdale and Middle creek was shocked last Friday evening by a message conveying the sad news of the death of Macy Johnson, son of Sam'I and Maria Johnson of Middle creek, five miles west of Elmdale.
The message stated that Macy was killed in an elevator but the facilities for communication being very meager, the particulars could not be ascertained until J. J. Jeffrey, who went at once to the scene of the disaster, returned on train 6, Sunday, with the corpse.
The facts seem to disclose the following:
Macy went west in the busy season of harvest and threshing with his team and found work. He proved himself to be so faithful at his work that he soon got a position in an elevator at Pollard, Rice county. He was so trusty that he was soon put at the head of the elevator as overseer.
In loading a car with wheat a board got in the spout and clogged the wheat. Macy, not apprehending any danger, jumped in the bin to remove the board. He soon discovered his perilous position and called for help. The boys ran to his assistance and just as he was going out of sight they seized him by the arms, but the wheat was giving way below, they saw they were also in danger. Seeing it was impossible to pull Macy out, they grabbed the sides of the bin and saved themselves.
They shut off the elevator and attempted to shovel Macy out, but with no effect. They then cut the side out of the elevator and let the wheat out on the ground, but also to late, as Macy was dead. Doctors were summoned at once, but attempts at resuscitation were of no avail.
Macy was an honorable young man, well beloved by his friends, and a great comfort to his aged father and mother in their declining years. The father, on account of sickness, was unable to attend the funeral.
The bereaved parents and sisters have the sympathies of the entire community. The funeral was said to be the
largest held at Elmdale for years. Rev. Harkness preached the funeral sermon. Also, the A. O. H. W. Lodge, of which he was a member, conducted ritual service. He was laid to rest in the cemetery west of Elmdale. He was insured for $2,000 payable to his mother.
