Jones, Evan D
"Another Pioneer Dies at
Strong."
Evan D. Jones, 80, veteran contractor and builder, died Thursday at the home of his
daughter, Mrs. Charles P. Gill in Strong City. He had been bedfast for the past two years. Funeral
services were held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 at the Congregational Church. The Rev. Mr. Roberts,
pastor of the Second Presbyterian Church of Emporia, conducted the services. Interment was in
Prairie Grove Cemetery.
Mr. Jones came to Chase County 46 years ago, and for many years
engaged in railroad bridge building.
Seven children survive Mr. Jones. They are: Mrs. Lucy Nethercutt of Kansas City, Mo., David J. Jones of
Topeka, Mrs. James E. Sheets of Newton, William J. Jones of Wichita, and Mrs. Charles Gill, Mrs. Carl
Palmer, and Arthur Jones, all of Strong City.
Among those from Emporia who were here Saturday to
attend the funeral were the following: The Rev. and Mrs. Roberts and daughter, Ed Lewis, Jim Lewis, R. C.
Williams, Bob Roberts, Evan Roberts, Mr. Hughes and Mrs. Griffith. George Lincoln of Florence was here
also.
Evan D. Jones was born January 7, 1846 in Dihewyd, Cardiganshire, South Wales, and died at the
home of his daughter, Mrs. Mary E. Gill, Strong City, May 20, 1926. He was united in marriage to Mary A.
Hill at Merthyr Tidfil, South Wales, March 27, 1869. Mrs. Jones died September 19, 1913. To this union
nine children were born- six girls and three boys. Two of the girls died in infancy. Following their marriage
Mr. Jones came to the United States and settled at Alleghany City, Pa., and in 1873 moved to Youngstown,
Ohio. In 1875 the family returned to South Wales, coming back to the United States in 1881, locating at
Emporia. They moved to Strong City in 1883, making this their home.
Mr. Jones entered into business for
himself and was a railroad stone contractor. He retired in the year of 1915. For many years his health
began to fail and the last two years he never left his bed. He was patient and kind through all his long
suffering and was ready to go when God called him home, where there is no pain and suffering. He was
loved by all who knew him and will be sadly missed.
Mr. Jones is survived by four daughters, three sons, six
grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. The funeral services were held Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at the
Congregational Church and was largely attended. A prayer and Welsh hymn was sung at the time. The
Rev. Mr. Roberts of Emporia officiated and delivered a most touching sermon. Many lovely floral tributes
testified to the host of friends who are mourning the loss of one whom they dearly loved and cherished.
Interment was in Prairie Grove Cemetery. The pall bearers were Ed Lewis, P. Norton, W. P. Rettiger, AI
Ryan, Charles Myers, and Harold Blackshere. The bereaved family have the sincere sympathy the entire
community
